We believe that a highly literate community is the key to everyone’s quality of life, economic self-sufficiency, and family stability.
Volunteer to Read with Kindergarteners & First Grade Students
Verona Elementary School in Battle Creek has opportunities to help kindergarteners and first graders learn to read!
Volunteers will support reading strategies that students are learning in the classroom by providing students with additional time and interventions for reading mastery.
Verona has made a commitment to transforming literacy instruction in the classroom, and is excited about inviting commited community members support their efforts by helping kindergarten students learn to read.
Volunteers would be expected to make a commitment of 30 minutes once (or twice) each week. This commitment would need to be for the entire school year, continuing through May 2013. Volunteers are welcomed all year long.
Volunteers will attend a 1.5 hour training to learn more about the program. During the training, volunteers would learn about strategies they can use to support student learning and the mentoring aspects of the volunteer experiences. All volunteers would also be required to undergo a criminal background check before entering the classroom.
